Speculation about Jake Paul’s next opponent has raged ever since his emphatic knockout of Ben Askren back in April.
Yet few could have predicted either Chael Sonnen or the legendary Mike Tyson would be in the mix!
Reports emerged late on Monday evening suggesting former UFC welterweight champion Woodley was in line to face the 24-year-old in what would be his boxing debut.
‘The Chosen One’ held the welterweight title for almost three years before being defeated by Kamaru Usman in 2019 and he has lost four fights in a row since then.
According to Mike Coppinger of The Athletic, the 39-year-old will step into the squared circle with Paul after their confrontation in Atlanta before the social media sensation knocked out Ben Askren.
Askren, a fellow former UFC employer, is close friends with Woodley and he is no longer contracted with the MMA organisation following his loss to Vicente Luque at UFC 261 – clearing the way for him to fight elsewhere.
However, according to Khabib Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdelaziz, Paul is actually going to fight 44-year-old Sonnen before facing ‘The Baddest Man on the Planet’.
The American retired in 2019 from MMA and was a contender in both the middleweight and light-heavyweight divisions of the UFC.
Despite having never boxed also, Sonnen certainly has the charisma to sell the fight, but lacks as many credentials as Woodley.
Abdelaziz tweeted: “The rumors [sic] are not true in fact Jake Paul’s next fight is going to be against Chael Sonnen and the winner is going to take on iron Mike Tyson.
“Nobody has better knowledge of these negotiations than me and I’m telling you everything.”
Sonnen replied instantly to the Tweet, claiming he would ‘beat Iron Mike, Jake Paul and T Wood all in the same night’.
The wrestler was never renowned for his stand-up game in MMA, just like Ben Askren, meaning Woodley would hypothetically pose a far more dangerous threat.
A decorated wrestler in his college days, Woodley does possess tremendous power and even holds the record for the fastest knockout in a UFC welterweight title fight.
He took to Instagram shortly after the reports broke and wrote: “Money and the Love. Jake Paul been a fan. Sad he gotta get handled by his hero.”
