Ben White has been called up to England’s 26-man Euro 2020 squad as the replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Liverpool full-back Alexander-Arnold was forced to withdraw from the squad after picking up an injury in last Wednesday’s friendly against Austria.
Jesse Lingard and James Ward-Prowse were seen as the two most likely candidates to get the call to come in by boss Gareth Southgate.
But it is Brighton’s White who has got the nod, less than a week after making his England debut.
The centre-back, who can also play in midfield, won his first cap as a substitute against Austria last Wednesday before making his first start in the win over Romania on Sunday.
White’s call-up suggests that Harry Maguire is nowhere near being ready for the tournament, which gets under way this week.
Maguire picked up an ankle injury and missed the last three weeks of the Premier League season, as well as Manchester United’s Europa League final.
There had been calls for Ward-Prowse to get that final place in the England squad due to his abilities from set-pieces.
talkSPORT host Jamie O’Hara was among those who felt the Southampton midfielder should have been the replacement for Alexander-Arnold.
“He’s one of the best set piece takers in the world,” O’Hara said, before White’s call up. “I can’t believe you’re not taking him because when there’s 20 minutes left, or is going to extra-time, and you think there’s nothing happening and can’t open teams up, what do you do?
“Jack Grealish wins a foul, Ward-Prowse comes on for 20 minutes, bends one in the top corner and you win 1-0.
“I could almost accept it with Trent, because he can take free-kicks, but he’s not on that level and we’re light in midfield. Ward-Prowse is a decent midfielder.”
