Declan Rice has stunned England fans everywhere by revealing he’s never had a pint of beer in his life.
But talkSPORT host Alan Brazil doesn’t believe him!
The West Ham midfielder admits he might enjoy his first ever pint to toast the Three Lions’ European Championship glory as he and the England side prepare for Euro 2020.
Rice has come a long way since switching allegiance from the Republic of Ireland, with whom he won the last of three senior caps in June 2018.
Now, he is at England’s base in the brewing town of Burton with 19 caps to his name and playing with his best friend, old Chelsea youth teammate Mason Mount.
But he was a fan the last time England played in a major tournament, cheering on the Three Lions at a giant fanzone in Dubai as they kicked off their unforgettable run to the World Cup semi-finals in 2018.
Videos of fans throwing beer in the air at such venues went viral during the tournament, but Rice was never going to be among those launching pints.
“It was crazy,” he told the media on Wednesday. “There were thousands of English fans. It was mental.”
And then came the bombshell that shocked Big Al to his very core…
“Do you know what, until this day I have never had a beer and I am 22,” he laughed. “That is the truth. Never had a pint. Don’t drink it.
“Not really [a drinker]. But a pint? No.
“I know it is off topic but I have never had a beer. People get surprised. I just don’t like the smell of it so I have never gone near it.”
Asked if he will have a beer if England win the Euros, Rice said: “Yes. I will give it a try – but I will probably spit it out!”
Teetotal footballers shouldn’t be much a shock in 2021, and there are plenty in the Premier League, including avid Ribena and Yorkshire Tea fan drinker James Milner.
Rice reveals Chelsea’s Mount has made the same sacrifices in his career, saying footballers ‘don’t get to live that life’.
“Loads of parties with best friends, going out on weekends, seeing my friends, the drinking side of it, all of my mates partying, sending me videos while I’m stuck in hotels – those things I quit when I was younger to work hard, and this has now made it all worth it,” he added.
But Brazil, wasn’t having any of it…
“Away you go – he’s a liar,” joked the talkSPORT Breakfast host.
“Are you telling me they don’t have a bevvie? I know some of them don’t but I know a lot of them love a pint!
“I’m not meaning any names, but I’ve seen them at Cheltenham having a couple of pints… and there’s nothing wrong with that!”
Dec, if you get an invite to join Big Al and Ray Parlour after the Euros, it’s probably best to decline…
