Ronald Koeman has confirmed Barcelona have ‘almost’ completed the signing of Memphis Depay.
The Netherlands forward looks set to join the LaLiga giants on a free transfer having let his contract run down at Lyon.
The ex-Manchester United man, who had also been linked with moves to Chelsea and Juventus, worked under countryman Koeman during the latter’s time in charge of Netherlands between 2018 and 2020.
Speaking earlier this week, Depay revealed his desire to work with Koeman again.
He said: “As I’ve said before, the transfer will become clear on its own. It remains to be seen, I want to leave it at that.
“Everyone knows that I have been linked to them [Barcelona] for a long time and that I want to play under Ronald Koeman. Let’s wait and see. Then the news will come by itself.”
Responding to Depay’s comments, Koeman gave the biggest indication yet that the player will be joining Barcelona.
He told reporters: “Memphis said something about it today and I can confirm that.
“It’s not signed yet, but it’s almost there. I wanted to get it in January, if it happens now, that’s great.
“We know what we can do together.”
Since leaving Man United for Lyon in 2017, Depay has scored 63 in 139 league appearances.
The 27-year-old, who is able to play as a winger or central striker, opened his Euro 2020 account with a penalty in a 2-0 win over Austria as Netherlands progressed to the last 16 on Thursday.
