USWNT went into the tournament as heavy favourites for the gold medal, to add to their impressive collection of competitions won.
They were on a run of 44-games unbeaten, before the match in Tokyo on Wednesday.
They were 4/7 favourites to take the top prize having an incredible record of winning four of the six most recent Olympics Games.
Megan Rapinoe started on the bench, but their line-up was full of experienced stars like captain Alex Morgan and Tobin Heath began the match.
Stina Blacksteniu opened the scoring for Sweden 25 minutes into the first half and they took that lead into the break.
Blacksteniu added her second ten minutes after half-time before the result was sealed by Lina Hurtig.
Speaking after the loss to Sweden, Rapinoe said: “We got our asses kicked, didn’t we? I thought we were a little tight, a little nervous, just doing dumb stuff.”
Their second group game is against New Zealand on Saturday, before facing Australia on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, there was a winning start for Great Britain who won 2-0 against Chile thanks to a brace from Ellen White.
